Course Description
Do you want to get acquainted with the textile denim – or do you want to gain a deeper understanding of the material? Do you dream of sewing your own jeans or denim jacket? Then this course is for you.
The course gives you an introduction to basic pattern understanding and the techniques needed to achieve a professional result in denim. You will work from an almost finished pattern for either jeans or jacket, with the possibility of minor personal adjustments.
The tutorial guides you through the technically demanding elements of denim construction, including pockets, trouser gussets, collars and other classic details. Emphasis is placed on correct material selection, construction and sewing techniques so that your finished product is in line with traditional denim styles and production methods.
The course also includes training on fit and tailoring to give you a better understanding of how denim products adjust to the body.
Prerequisite:
Participants must have a basic knowledge of using a sewing machine.

Teacher
Mikkel Johansen
Mikkel Johansen graduated from the Scandinavian Academy of Fashion Design (formerly Margrethe-Skolen) and works as an independent fashion designer and product developer.
Modules
The teacher introduces himself and the course. Course participants review their expectations and individual skills. The teacher will go through the products, material and relevant history. Students then choose the product they want to work with and gather inspiration and references. The students solves a common initial task and begins pattern construction for their products.
The module starts with the class performing a number of sewing tests to introduce basic machine use and sewing techniques. Short presentations on relevant and general techniques will be given in plenary along the way, as it becomes relevant to the students. Machines and tools are also reviewed during the course. The students starts/continues working on their prototype for fitting and adjustments.
At this point, students should have completed, fitted and customized their model. We expect to be able to cut out fabric and start the desired product.
Students are taking the first steps in sewing their product. The students follows the steps together as much as possible. There will also be individual sparring, and students will receive ongoing feedback on their progress. tools that can be used, tips for implementation, etc.
Work continues on the projects. Students may be at different stages in the creation of their products, but the teacher keeps the focus on following individual groups. Otherwise, work is done individually and the teacher guides the students with their projects.
The selected product is finalized. At the end of the module, students and teacher review products and possible additions/corrections together. There will be personalized feedback and guidance on how students can apply their newly learned knowledge and experience to future projects.

Classes are held in both Danish and English. We have participants from both Denmark and abroad, and it’s fine if you only understand English. The teachers make sure everyone gets the information they need.
To sign up, click the “Enrollment” button and fill out the form. Once you have signed up, you will receive a confirmation email.
Payment is made at registration and can be made with VISA, Mastercard, American Express, Diners, Maestro, Apple Pay and Google Pay. All prices are in Danish Kroner (DKK). If you cannot use one of these payment methods, please contact us for an alternative solution.
You will receive a material list after registration. Some courses require specific materials (e.g. fabric, sketchbooks or drawing tools) that you need to bring or buy yourself. Any additional costs over and above the course fee will be clearly stated.
Sewing machines will be available for all participants.
Our courses are designed to cater to different experience levels – from beginners to more advanced participants. Each course has its own target group, and we recommend that you read each course description carefully to find the course that best suits your needs and ambitions.
In all courses, we emphasize thorough individual guidance so you can develop at your own pace – whatever your starting point. If you have previous experience in the field, the teachers will help you deepen and refine your techniques.
We do not provide accommodation for our students, but we recommend using platforms such as Airbnb, Booking.com or similar short-term rental services. In addition, we have gathered advice and useful links for housing in Copenhagen here.
Most of our students are between 18 and 35 years old, but we welcome all participants over the age of 16 – regardless of age, background or experience.
Our courses attract a wide range of people, both from Denmark and abroad. From young people considering a future in fashion and design, to students, entrepreneurs, career changers and passionate hobbyists or designers.
We are committed to creating an inclusive and respectful learning environment where diversity is a strength – both academically and socially. Many of our participants say that it’s the mix of age, nationality and experience that makes the courses extra inspiring and educational.
So whether you’re 17 or 57, if you want to learn, be creative and develop your skills, you’re more than welcome.
Application deadlines vary from course to course, but places are limited and fill up quickly. We recommend that you register as early as possible. You can find the exact dates on the individual course pages.
Unless otherwise stated in the course description, you can withdraw and get your course fee back up to 14 days before the course starts. After that, the registration is binding and the amount is non-refundable.
In the unlikely event that a team is not created, we will of course refund the full amount.
