The Mentoring Program

The Fashion Production program is a consultancy program designed to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to turn their passion for fashion into a concrete reality. This comprehensive course will give you insight into the essential steps and processes involved in producing fashion items in small to medium quantities. Whether you’re an aspiring designer, looking to start your own clothing production or a buyer who wants to better understand the production process, this course will give you the tools you need to succeed in the fashion world.

During the program, we will advise and help develop tech packs that are ready to be put into production. It will also cover how to choose the right production facilities based on quality, capacity and adherence to ethical standards, how to adapt and modify your designs to meet market needs, how to handle logistics, supply chain management and financial aspects of fashion production, and much more.

The fashion industry is a rapidly changing landscape dominated by the urgent need to reform production practices to become more agile, cleaner and smarter. This course will therefore equip you with key skills and knowledge essential for success in fashion production in a dynamic and competitive industry.

Support Schemes

There are various ways to get financial support for courses, programs and counseling. Your options depend on your current situation and whether you are unemployed, employed or already self-employed with your own CVR number.

Applicable if you have a CVR + minimum 2 full-time employees.

Applicable if you have a Danish CVR number, 0-249 employees and at least one closed financial statement

Applicable if you have a Danish CVR number, have growth ambitions of at least 500.000 DKK in revenue within max. 2 years and have an interest in unlocking or strengthening a green potential.

If you are employed and covered by a collective agreement, you can get support for competence development.

A-Kasse or Jobcenter

If you are unemployed, you may be eligible for courses through your unemployment insurance fund (A-Kasse) or jobcenter. It is your caseworker or jobcenter consultant who decides if you can be approved for a course with us. You should therefore contact your local job center or unemployment insurance fund to find out more about your eligibility for one of our courses.

Course Certificate

Once you have successfully completed our course at SAFD, you will receive a course certificate confirming your completion of the course and its modules. This certificate will strengthen your CV and expand your career opportunities, and it will symbolize your dedication, skills and knowledge of the course’s professional content.

Mentor

Mats Beckman

Mats has been working with production processes in the fashion industry for more than a decade and has launched several fashion companies. Mats is also an award-winning designer and has received much recognition for his previous work.

Contents

This module will introduce you to technical drawings and specifications that are essential for communicating design ideas to the production team. You will learn how to translate creative designs into detailed technical documents. This includes measurements, sketches, materials, seam types and all other necessary information to achieve an accurate production process.

Here you will learn how to create style sheets that contain all the necessary information about design, measurements and materials. Style sheets are important as they act as a guide for the production team and ensure that each product is consistent with the original design.

This module focuses on evaluating and selecting the right production facilities based on quality, capacity and compliance with ethical standards. You will learn how to analyze production sites, understand the technical capabilities and ensure they meet the necessary ethical standards for sustainable fashion production.

You’ll dive into the customization process and understand how you can adapt and change designs to meet market needs. This includes responding to trends, customer demands and changes in the fashion industry while still maintaining the core identity of the design.

This module covers the importance of providing clear care instructions for clothing products and materials. You will learn how to identify the correct care instructions based on materials and construction, which is essential to ensure product longevity and quality.

You will learn about logistics, supply chain management and financial aspects of fashion production. This includes understanding inventory management, delivery methods, costing and financial planning for the successful production and distribution of apparel products.

This module will explore different textile materials and testing procedures that are essential for product development. You will learn about different textile types, their properties and how to create prototypes and samples to test and evaluate design concepts.

You will understand how to create private label products and customize them to customer needs. This involves creating products with another company’s branding, and you’ll learn how to customize designs, labels and marketing to meet specific customer requirements.

This module covers production management, including scheduling and quality control to achieve the highest production standards. You will learn how to organize the production process, implement quality control methods and ensure that products are in accordance with set specifications.

You will gain insight into the buying and selling process in the fashion industry and learn about pricing strategies. This includes understanding how to source raw materials, negotiate contracts with suppliers and how to strategically price products to achieve profitability in the market.

This module allows participants to receive individual guidance from the mentor, where any questions and challenges are addressed and resolved.

Process

1. Startup, Planning and Structuring

This is the initial phase where a plan is created in collaboration with the mentor to identify the participant's goals, wants and needs. This will cover design briefs, market research, color charts, material selection, fashion forecasting, cost management, product lifecycle, technical details and more.

2. Design and Development

In this phase, we work on the design and development of the tech pack with a focus on visual appeal and functionality as well as the implementation of textiles, baths, buttons, zippers, features, details, variants, etc.

3. Optimization and Launch

Here we will get tech packs ready to be sent to production, and we will review production strategies and manufacturing processes. This involves reviewing supply chains, consumer needs, etc.

Yes, throughout the entire process there is the opportunity for personal 1-1 sparring, meetings, workshops, etc. where you can get help, ask questions, develop concepts or if you want sparring in relation to the specific project.

No, you follow along at the pace and time that feels best for you. At the first meeting, we develop a plan that is tailored to your needs and wishes. Therefore, there is no requirement for you to be ready at certain times, as our desire is always to create a setup that feels calm and flexible for you.

Instead of learning software from scratch, the course focuses on advice and guidance to realize your concrete projects. You will be supported to solve specific challenges relevant to your own design or business.

The duration of the course depends on your project and goals. We work flexibly and adapt the course to your needs, so you can work at your own pace.

We develop tech packs and line sheets in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop may in some cases be used to develop graphics, prints, etc.

It is not necessary for students to have knowledge of the programs mentioned, as we will show how they can be used specifically for the relevant tasks. If you are familiar with the programs, the course will be adapted to the needs of the participants.

The course is designed around the latest Adobe Creative Cloud version of Illustrator, but you can still follow the course with older versions of Illustrator as many of the techniques will be the same. However, please note that there may be features that will not be available in older versions.

Adobe Illustrator can vary in price depending on whether you are a student, teacher, company employee or self-employed. and typically cost from 150 kr. and up. However, Adobe often runs promotions, so you’ll also be able to get it at an even lower price during selected periods. You can see more about pricing here.
